What are the new rules? Ensure your rental properties meet these regulations

More than just checking your switchboard or repairing a faulty appliance!

New changes to the Residential Tenancy Act 1997 dictate that a comprehensive service, as well as testing of all electrical fittings and installations, must be completed by a licensed and registered electrician.

These rules were originally due to come into effect in July 2020, but were postponed until this year due to the global pandemic.

We’re proactively contacting our vast network of property managers and real estate agents to ensure they’re well prepared as these new regulations come into force.

What do you need to do?

If you’re a rental provider or property manager…

As a rental provider, you must ensure that an electrical safety check of all electrical appliances, installations, and fittings is conducted every two years by a licensed and qualified electrician.

You must also, upon request, provide the renter with the date of the most recent safety check.

To organise electrical installations for your portfolio of rental properties, get in touch with Briggs Electrical today.

If you’re a tenant…

You have the right to ask your landlord the date of the latest inspection. If it was more than 2 years ago, your rental provider must organise one as soon as reasonably possible.
