CCTV installation in Melbourne: where do I begin?

So you’ve seen the news stories about home invasions and robberies, and you’ve decided, once and for all, that it’s time to finally get that security system installed…

  • You might be concerned that crime, in general, is up 4% in Victoria
  • Or perhaps you know that the average number of homes burgled in Victoria is 1 in 67
  • Or maybe you’re wary of the fact that burglaries in Victoria spiked from 45,000 during April 2014 and March 2015 to 51,134 during April 2015 and March 2016 (a five-year record high).

You’ve been talking about it with your family for months and truth be told, it’s been on your mind for a lot longer than that. But the real question you ask yourself is, amongst all the brands and types of security systems available… where do I begin?

There are so many home security system companies out there, all offering unique and excellent security solutions for the home or office, but how can you skip all the shopping around, but still end up with a customised solution akin to not only your budget, but your home’s specific characteristics, too?

How Briggs Electrical can help create your home security system

We follow a pretty standard method when it comes to creating a home security system. You see, while budgets and home layouts differ, the end goal for almost any customer is almost always the same.

The goal is two-fold:

1) “I want to ensure my home is safe when I am not there.”

2) “I want a system that will help deter would-be thieves from the exterior of my property, regardless if I (or someone else) is home or not.”

Step 1: assess layout and location of your home

This is where we look at the cosmetics of your home:

  • Location
  • Whether it’s double storey
  • If it’s in a block of apartments
  • What it backs on to (public space like a park or bike path etc.)
  • Surrounding laneways
  • Distance from the street
  • And more

Step 2: advise on suitable systems

Motion sensors and door and window sensors make up the basics of many home alarm systems.

When the alarm is activated, motion sensors detect movement while window and door sensors can identify if a window or door (of course) has been opened while the alarm is activated.

Step 3: keep your budget in check

One of the most important factors is a customer’s budget. It guides all types of household projects.

It’s hard to resist temptation and customers can easily slip, resulting in a blown-out budget, so we work really closely and really hard with each customer to ensure we stick to a realistic budget and deliver within those parameters.

Step 4: consider add-ons

✓ SOUND SENSORS:

As mentioned above, sensors on windows and doors are only activated when an unlocked window or door has been opened, so do not take into account invasions through broken glass (e.g. a smashed window).

Sound sensors are a useful add-on you might like to consider, where sounds such as breaking glass activates the alarm while it is armed.

✓ PANIC BUTTONS:

These controls are located at various locations around the interior of a home and within seconds can be pushed to activate an alarm (silent or otherwise). Panic buttons are extremely useful for elderly residents who require a straightforward method to gain help rapidly.

✓  SENSOR LIGHTING:

Sensor lighting is not only a good deterrent if a would-be burglar is approaching your home and activating a light, but also it’s also incredibly useful for you and your family when arriving home late at night. Sensors mean you do not have to leave a light on all night purely for those few minutes when you are arriving home.

✓ INTERCOM / VIDEO SYSTEMS:

See who’s on the other side (without anyone knowing you’re home!) with an intercom and video system. These are useful if you want to spy on who’s rung your doorbell or even speak to them through the intercom without having to open your front door.

Step 5: finalise the solution

Once you’re confident that we have covered all safety concerns in your home or office, we’ll finalise the solution and source all the required technology and equipment.

Step 6: install and set up the solution

Now it’s up to us to ensure we install the system correctly and optimally.

Once initial set-up is complete, we’ll perform necessary testing and we’ll run through the system with you and your family. When we leave your home, we’re leaving behind solid reassurance that your new alarm or CCTV system is protecting you and your family.

Quick tips for the best home security…

  • At a bare minimum, every window and door in your home should be fixed with secure locks that exceed Australian safety standards (our friends at Galmier Locksmiths can help you out there)
  • Install a home alarm system that’s activated by motion sensors that can detect movement when you are not at home
  • Consider the addition of CCTV cameras to the exterior and/or interior of your home or office, adding that extra layer of reassurance to your overall security system
